Used Equipment buying advice.

The Internet offers a vast array of used audio equipment in all price ranges and from all type of sellers.
There are some bargains and some ripoffs, but how do you know what’s what? Here’s some things you should
know, before you buy.

1. Ask the seller if he has a receipt from a factory authorized dealer.
Manufacturers require a receipt from an authorized dealer to provide any warranty coverage, there are no exceptions on this rule. You buy at your own risk if there is no receipt from an authorized dealer, and some equipment can only be repaired by the original manufacturer! Some manufacturers will warranty the unit to the original buyer only. A receipt may also indicate if it was a “B” stock item.

2. Watch out for scratched off, or altered, serial numbers.
No valid serial number means no warranty coverage. We’ve had a rash of customers buying equipment with scratched off serial numbers from all manufacturers, so watch out. “B” stock items are also determined by checking the serial number with the manufacturer.

3. Sensitive electronic equipment can be damaged in shipping.
We hear it all the time, “I bought this _____(amp, speaker, processor) and it doesn’t work can you repair it?” “I bought it from a guy and he said it worked when he sold it, so he said I must have done something to it and now he won’t return my calls.”
